Overall Experience
My experience was truly life-changing. I had studied abroad before, but this was entirely different. We lived with an incredible host family who helped us adapt to the cultural changes and made us feel at home. I took a psychology class that was both engaging and fun, and I also had the opportunity to intern at an Occupational Center for individuals with disabilities. There, I worked alongside a physical therapist, learning from her expertise and gaining hands-on experience. This journey not only deepened my understanding of Spanish culture and people, but also gave me a unique perspective and memories I will always treasure.
Learning experience
The most valuable part of my experience was my internship, which constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone. I quickly learned that stepping into unfamiliar situations was the best way to grow. Building relationships with patients, many of whom found change difficult, required patience, understanding, and adaptability. I had to learn how to present myself in a way that earned their trust while maximizing every opportunity. One memorable challenge was being asked to lead a Zumba class, an activity that I had never imagined myself doing. Back home, I probably would have said no, but I set my nerves aside, knowing the patients would enjoy it and that it was another chance to push myself. In the end, it became one of the most rewarding and fun moments of my internship.
Memorable experience
One of the most memorable experiences was celebrating San Juan, a beloved holiday in Valencia filled with history, myths, and traditions. Everyone in our city headed to the beach early in the afternoon, and it was filled with laughter, celebration, and fun. Everyone from our program attended together, and we spent hours talking, sharing food, and enjoying the warmth of the sun while a bonfire slowly took shape for the night’s festivities. As midnight approached, following the local custom, we all ran into the sea, the cool water rushing over our feet, and jumped over seven waves, making a wish with each leap. Fireworks exploded in the sky, casting brilliant colors across the ocean, and for a moment, everything felt surreal. Between the warmth of the fire behind us, the energy of the crowd, and the joy of sharing in such a meaningful tradition, I felt completely connected to the culture and the people around me.
What did you not expect?
One thing I did not expect was how different certain everyday customs were. In the U.S., we typically greet each other with a handshake, but in Spain, a warm hug and a kiss on each cheek is the norm. At first, I was caught off guard by this level of closeness, it felt so personal compared to what I was used to. But over time, it became second nature, and I began to appreciate the warmth and openness it conveyed. This shift in perspective extended into my internship, where I worked closely with individuals with disabilities. That same cultural warmth shaped the way I interacted with patients, whether it was greeting them with a smile and a hug, celebrating small victories together, or simply taking the time to listen. I realized that these personal touches built trust faster and made our connections stronger. Not just the greetings, it was the way people spoke to each other, their physical closeness, and their comfort in expressing connection. These small but meaningful differences made me feel truly welcome and part of the community. This experience has given me a new perspective on how small gestures can build trust and connection, both in life and in my future medical career. It has also given me more confidence in approaching situations I am less familiar with, knowing that openness and warmth can bridge cultural and personal differences.
What advice would you give?
My advice would be to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try everything at least once. I truly would not have learned as much or met the amazing people I did if I hadn’t. The best way to grow is through experience, and this program is an incredible opportunity to do just that. For example, working in physical therapy at an occupational center was not my first choice, but it ended up changing my life forever and for the better. I discovered a deep connection with the patients and a passion I hadn’t expected, which reshaped my career goals. I entered the program with a list of fears and reservations, but I left with none of them being true and with more confidence, perspective, and contentment than I had before.
How has this experience impacted your life?
This experience deepened my love for meeting people and learning about new cultures, inspiring me to seek more international opportunities in the future. On an educational and long-term level, it revealed a different side of myself. I have always envisioned a career in the medical field, particularly in general family practice. However, after my internship experience, I now feel drawn to working with individuals with disabilities. I discovered a unique love and connection with the people I met, and I looked forward to each day of learning and engagement. This opportunity has ignited a passion I want to continue nurturing as I explore future paths.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first discovered this opportunity on the website, which sparked some initial interest. However, after hearing positive feedback from my peers, I was motivated to learn more about the program. And along with a few friends we had a meeting with an advisor to learn more.
