Responsibilities
During my internship, I would follow the school's guidance counselor. She is the counselor for 5th-8th grade and sees numerous students every day. I would be in the room with her during some one-on-ones, and I helped in the classroom when she would do lessons. Our days would look different every day, and we never knew what would come up during the day. It was a great opportunity to see what school counselors do in their everyday work and see how they fit within the school system.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment is forming connections with students. The most rewarding parts are when students give me hugs, tell me they like talking with me, and feel like I'm someone they trust. Being a consistent adult in their lives was my greatest accomplishment and something I strived for.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson I learned is that not everyone is going to like you. There are going to be times you really click with people and times you meet people you avoid at all costs. Learn how to work with both.
What advice would you give?
Don't be afraid to ask questions! Your teachers are there to answer them and want you to be engaged. Also, go to class. It's your time and money you're wasting by not showing up.
