Clear Bag Policy

All events taking place at Hilton Coliseum will follow the venue’s clear bag policy as outlined on cyclones.com and found below.

Clear Bag Policy & Restricted Items

The Iowa State Athletics Department has a clear bag policy for all ticketed events. The following bag types are allowed:

  • Plastic, vinyl, or PVC clear totes that do not exceed 12x6x12 inches and do not have a logo larger than 4.5×3.5 inches;
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (i.e. Ziploc or similar);
  • Small clutch bags no larger than 6×9 inches;
  • Exceptions will be made for bags containing items required for medical, family, or child care.

All bags are subject to search at the discretion of security staff and prohibited bags will not be held by staff during the event. Unlawful items are subject to confiscation.

Prohibited Items include, but are not limited to:
Alcoholic beverages
Artificial noisemakers
Backpacks, fanny packs, purses (or any bag that is not clear)
Cameras (a lens less than 6 inches is permitted in the Coliseum)
Chairbacks or stadium seats
Coolers or containers
Beach balls
Food and beverages
Pets (with the exception of service animals used by disabled guests)
Strollers
Umbrella
Video cameras
Weapons
Tools, razor blades, scissors, etc.
Sealed packages of any kind, including gifts
Laser pointing devices, flashlights, or glowsticks
Selfie sticks, telescopic devices, tripods, or camera poles
Hazardous items including, but not limited to, fuels, torches, lighter fluid, chemicals, paint, batteries, or aerosols

Prohibited items must be returned to the owner’s car or discarded a minimum 300 feet away from the exterior of the venue.  Any unlawful items are subject to confiscation, and the person in possession of such items is subject to arrest.

Graduate Students

Graduate students in the College of Health and Human Sciences are welcome to attend the CHHS Graduate Student reception on Thursday, May 15. The reception is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the ISU Alumni Center. Please RSVP if you plan to attend the reception.

Iowa State University’s Graduate Commencement will be held on Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

Undergraduate Students

Convocation

Who: Undergraduate students approved for graduation or early walks
Time: Friday, May 16, 1 p.m. (convocation lasts approximately an hour – doors open at noon).
Place: Hilton Coliseum
Parking: Lots around Hilton Coliseum

The College of Health and Human Sciences Undergraduate Convocation is only for students in the college and provides a more individualized celebration of CHHS student achievements.

The convocation will include greetings from the Dean of the College, comments by a student speaker, and individual recognition of each graduating student who is in attendance. At the conclusion of the recognition of student award recipients, students will cross the stage as their names are read and be recognized by the Dean and the chair or director of their respective academic department or school.

Seating is unlimited and tickets are not required for admission. Attendance is optional.

Reception – to follow Convocation

Graduates, families, and friends are invited to a reception (beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Scheman Building (directly west of Hilton Coliseum). The reception is a good time to visit with family, friends, and faculty and to take small group photographs.

Student Directions to Attend Convocation

Students should RSVP for the CHHS Convocation by following the instructions on the ISU Graduation and Commencement webpage.

  • Arrive at Hilton Coliseum by 12:15 p.m.
  • Enter the east doors to pick up your reader card (Plan enough time to complete your reader card with your mailing address and email address)
  • You will line up by major. Those with a double major or degree can choose which major you would like to sit/cross the stage with.
  • Leave belongings (purses, coats, other valuables) in the car or with family/friends.

Cap and Gown Required

Black gown and cap with maroon tassel are required. These may be purchased from the ISU Book Store, Memorial Union. Students who have successfully completed the Honors Program and/or are graduating with distinction (3.5+ GPA) are encouraged to wear Honor cords.

Distinction cords are distributed by the Office of Registrar. If you have qualified for distinction cords, you will receive an email from the Office of the Registrar about a month before graduation with the date, time, and location to pick up your cords.

Early Walks

Those students who wish to participate in the College of Health and Human Sciences Convocation but do not graduate during the current term should submit an early participation request (PDF).

Special Arrangements

Any graduate or guest who plans to attend the College of Health and Human Sciences Convocation and who will need special assistance during the ceremony, should email Dynette Mosher or call 515-294-2820 prior to the ceremony to make arrangements.

Crossing the Stage

The most important part of the convocation is the individual recognition of graduates. Only the names of students who are present will be read. Recognition will be grouped by major. If you have multiple majors or will earn multiple degrees, you will be recognized only once. Marshals will lead the graduates to the foot of the stage to be recognized by the Dean and the graduate’s respective department chair or school director as the graduate’s name is read.

Diploma

Diplomas will not be handed out at the CHHS Convocation but rather can be:

  • Picked up by the graduate in 210 Enrollment Services or
  • Mailed to the student 2-3 weeks after graduation.

Photographs

Empire Photography will take a photo of each graduate as they cross the stage and is greeted by the Dean. Graduating students may order photos using an online ordering system. However, you are under no obligation to order any photos.

University Undergraduate Commencement

Students can also attend the Iowa State University Undergraduate Commencement. This ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 7 p.m. The College of Health and Human Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are part of this ceremony. The event is livestreamed.
