Responsibilities

My responsibilities during my internship included shadowing many different BHIS providers in Ames. This included telehealth, home visits, and school sessions. Besides shadowing, I also researched independently whether it was learning about certain life skills or fun activities to do during the session. I also learned how to write notes for sessions.

Accomplishments

I think my greatest accomplishment was gaining insight into the BHIS setting and evaluating whether it suited my professional goals. The flexible, hybrid nature of the role allows for personal schedule management, which can be a great advantage for those who thrive in that environment, however I didn't like how inconsistent days were scheduling-wise wise including client cancellations. If you like hybrid jobs and creating your schedule, this job and internship are definitely for you, though! I enjoyed the work, just not the scheduling!

Learning experience

Being a BHIS intern taught me how to support kids and families through tough times. I saw how being patient and kind can make a big difference. I saw a variety of different types of clients and it was fun to see the different types of ways others like to learn and use their coping skills for their situations.

What advice would you give?

Some advice is always to ask questions and not to be afraid. The more you know before starting your internship will help you as you go. As well as during your internship, always ask questions, whether it's just to those in your environment or your supervisor.
