Responsibilities

Successfully led fitness classes independently by the end of the internship, transitioning into a paid trainer role. Built strong, trusting relationships with senior participants, improving their physical fitness and overall mood. Received direct positive feedback from participants and supervisors regarding class structure, engagement, and results. Helped participants improve their testing scores in balance, strength, and flexibility, reflecting the effectiveness of the classes taught. Boosted personal confidence in leading, instructing, and managing fitness groups independently. Gained valuable experience creating, modifying, and implementing fitness programming for a specialized population. Strengthened communication and leadership skills through one-on-one and group interactions. Developed a deeper understanding of the importance of fitness, socialization, and mental health in older adult populations. Demonstrated adaptability by teaching across different locations and adjusting to varied participant needs and site dynamics.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was building meaningful relationships with the participants while helping them improve their physical health. After fitness testing at the North Senior Center, several participants shared how much progress they had made and how the exercises we did in class truly helped them. Hearing that feedback was incredibly rewarding, it showed me that I was making a real impact. It also boosted my confidence as a trainer and reminded me how powerful movement and connection can be, especially in a senior population.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned during my internship was that confidence grows through experience and connection. At the beginning, I was nervous about leading classes, but over time—through consistent practice and encouragement from my supervisors and participants—I found my voice and leadership style. I also learned the importance of adaptability, especially when working with older adults who have a wide range of physical abilities and needs. Lastly, I realized how powerful fitness can be not only for physical health, but for building community and improving mental and emotional well-being. This experience showed me that being a great trainer goes beyond the workout—it's about showing up with positivity, patience, and genuine care.

What advice would you give?

Say yes to opportunities that push you out of your comfort zone, confidence comes through experience. Build strong relationships, stay open-minded, and be willing to learn from every population you work with. You never know what part of the field you'll end up loving most.
