Responsibilities
I am responsible for leading the day-to-day programs at the playhouse. I assist with the three main summer programs. These programs include cooking classes, fitness, and karaoke.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my experience was having the clients excited to have me there. The atmosphere was very encouraging from all people and this was a great push to have. There were a lot of breakthroughs I had with participants that brought them and myself a lot of joy.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson I learned from my experience is we should not automatically assume all of the things someone can't do when they have a disability, but we should continue to provide them with the opportunity to grow and show us all of the things they are capable of. I learned that working in the non-profit world isn't always easy, and it does get stressful, but there is a reward that comes with that, and it's providing others with opportunities that weren't originally out there.
What advice would you give?
My advice for future students is to enjoy their time at their internship. You will more than likely realize one of two things. This is what you want to do, or it's not what you want to do. Either way, you are gaining experience towards something. Always ask questions, stay engaged, and absorb at much knowledge as possible.
