Responsibilities
Set-up and take-down of weightlifting and speed/agility equipment, leading athletes through workouts (both speed/agility and lifting sessions) at both the middle school and high school level, give individual attention to help correct weightlifting form, periodic cleaning of the weight room as needed, and use of strength performance technology.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment was leading both a high school session and a middle school session from start to finish: moving from the warm-up, to a speed/agility station, and then the lift. Another accomplishment was being able to remember names and form relationships with the athletes.
Learning experience
I learned that the more experience I had on the floor, I felt more confident and I performed my responsibilities better. The first time I was able to lead a session, it went well, but it was not as organized or time-conscious as it could have been. As time went on, I was able to find out what worked well in terms of organization and keeping things time efficient. I also learned the importance of making connections with the clients that I was working with.
What advice would you give?
An internship is what you decide to make it. Taking an internship just for credit and sleepwalking through the entire thing will be far less beneficial than making the most out of an opportunity. It is important to take an internship seriously and to not be afraid to go the extra mile for more experience.
