Responsibilities
This Summer, I served as a Manager at an Aquatic Center. My responsibilities included overseeing the daily operations, managing a team of lifeguards and staff, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and providing exceptional customer service to patrons. I was also responsible for scheduling management and coordinating staff shifts, handling customer inquiries and complaints, and conducting staff trainings.
Accomplishments
At the Aquatic Center, safety remains our top priority. As the lifeguard instructor on staff, I have had the privilege of certifying many of the lifeguards, and I've provided training to the entire team throughout this aquatic season. Unfortunately, we encountered a couple of serious emergencies related to heat. However, I am incredibly proud of the exceptional efficiency and level of care exhibited by my staff during those critical moments. Being able to impart my years of training effectively to others has been truly fulfilling, and I would consider my greatest accomplishment. Witnessing the lifeguards' preparedness and response during emergencies validates the importance of proper instruction and reinforces my commitment to their ongoing professional development. Ensuring the safety of all patrons at the Aquatic Center has been a rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the collective effort in maintaining a secure and enjoyable environment for everyone.
Learning experience
Throughout my internship, I learned several valuable lessons that will stay with me in my future career. Firstly, effective communication and open dialogue are paramount in managing a team. Listening to my team members' perspectives and addressing their concerns positively contributed to a more motivated and cohesive staff. Secondly, adaptability is essential in a dynamic work environment like an Aquatic Center. I learned to handle unexpected challenges calmly and flexibly, finding creative solutions to ensure smooth operations. Lastly, the importance of leadership by example became evident. By consistently demonstrating a strong work ethic and embodying the values I expected from my team, I gained their respect and inspired a culture of excellence.
What advice would you give?
To future students pursuing a major in Hospitality Management, my advice is to actively seek internship opportunities early in your academic journey. Internships provide invaluable hands-on experience, enabling you to apply classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios. Embrace every opportunity to learn, take on responsibilities, and demonstrate your passion for the field. Additionally, develop strong communication skills, as effective communication is vital in building successful relationships with both team members and customers. Finally, be open to learning from everyone around you. Whether it's your supervisors, colleagues, or even customers, every interaction can offer valuable insights that contribute to your personal and professional growth.
