Responsibilities

I provided ABA therapy in both individual and group settings to children and adolescents with autism and other developmental disabilities under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts. My responsibilities included teaching social, play, and communication skills; following skill acquisition and behavior reduction protocols; and collecting and recording data through direct observation. I collaborated in developing engaging therapeutic activities and programs. Additionally, I wrote daily therapy session notes and worked closely with a treatment team that included the child, parents and caregivers, outside professionals, and co-workers. I also maintained and expanded my technical knowledge by attending required trainings and professional development events.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment was obtaining my Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification. This achievement reflects my dedication to the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and my commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based support to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Learning experience

Some of the greatest lessons I learned from my experience are the importance of patience, consistency, and empathy when working with individuals with developmental disabilities. I learned how powerful small, incremental progress can be, and how meaningful it is to celebrate those successes with the individuals and families I supported.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students in Human Development and Family Studies is to keep an open mind, especially when it comes to internship opportunities. Just because an internship is unpaid doesn’t mean it’s not valuable. Some of the most meaningful experiences and professional growth can come from positions that offer hands-on learning and strong mentorship, even without financial compensation. These opportunities can help you build skills, expand your network, and clarify your career goals. Focus on the long-term benefits and the impact the experience can have on your future.
