Responsibilities

Complete a 40-hour training program and pass a test to become a registered behavior technician. Once certified, I worked to implement individualized behavior reduction plans created by the BCBA. The biggest goals we target are problem behavior reduction, increasing functional communication skills, and life skills/general skill acquisition. We work as one big team and are always helping each other out with clients and care plans!

Accomplishments

My biggest accomplishment during this internship would be how much I learned. I remember the first few days here when I was observing sessions and I felt so overwhelmed and like I would never be able to run a session by myself. Now I have all the confidence in the world and I walk into work every day feeling excited to see my clients and provide services to them. I have learned so much, and I am so grateful to have this knowledge now that I am graduating.

Learning experience

The greatest lesson I learned during my internship was patience. I feel like I had patience prior to starting my internship, but I learned much more throughout my time. Every day was different, and every client was very different, so it took a lot of patience to transition and care for a wide range of clients every day.

What advice would you give?

The advice I have would be to get involved and do as much shadowing as possible. I wish I had more experience and got to explore more careers before it was time to graduate and apply for jobs! Get all the opportunities in while you can!
