Responsibilities
Some of my responsibilities during my internship included assisting members with laundry, cooking, and other basic household tasks. I helped feed members, changed briefs, helped members use the restroom, and helped shower the members. I also learned how to administer medication to members through a g tube, as well as learned how to give nebulizer and shaky vest treatments, and turn on/set up a CPAP machine and 02 monitor.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my internship experience would be making strong connections with the members and seeing that my work is making a difference. Hearing from the members that they enjoy having me and receiving hugs from some of the members as I'm leaving reminds me that what I am doing has a positive impact on the members.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson that I learned from my experience is to not be afraid to try new things and step outside of your comfort zone a little bit. I really had to step outside of my comfort zone at first with certain tasks, and although this was a little scary at first, I ended up learning a lot and having a great experience with my internship.
What advice would you give?
Some advice that I have for future students in my major is to not be afraid to try new things. Even if you think you might not be interested in a certain area, you truly will never know if it's for you or not unless you try it. Additionally, don't be afraid to reach out to your supervisor or another employee if you have any questions or need help with something. That's what they are there for.
