Responsibilities

During my Internship, I get the opportunity to plan events from start to finish, doing things like creating Banquet Event Orders, Diagrams, and all the details that go into planning events! I also assist with the setup and tear-down of the events, and worked them as well! The Alumni Center has a lot of interesting and fun events affiliated with Iowa State, but also a lot of events for the public in Ames and surrounding areas! We do events like pep rallies, tailgates, weddings, conferences, career fairs, awards ceremonies, and a wide variety of other fun events!

Accomplishments

I would say my greatest accomplishment was working an event for the Board of Directors of Iowa State. I got invited to be a part of some fun activities with the event that really pushed me out of my comfort zone and led me to have some great networking experiences with the Board of Directors!

Learning experience

Definitely how to have great communication skills and really push yourself out of your comfort zone. Since we work with such a wide variety of events, that means we work with a wide variety of people, so learning how to communicate with each and every one of them in a way that works for them is key to having a successful event. This job has really pushed me out of my comfort zone by giving me leadership opportunities that arent typically offered in an average internship, and is truly preparing me for my future job opportunities!

What advice would you give?

Don't be afraid to try something new! Event Management has such a wide variety of career options, so don't limit yourself to one thing. Apply for any and all job opportunities, because the more options, the better! You don't need to have everything figured out right away, so really take time to find what you love doing!
