Mason Carr
Responsibilities
I co-led warm-ups/cool-downs and exercise classes every day. Created flyers to promote activities going on at Northcrest as well as posters for informing the residents of different health topics that would be of interest, like the benefits of good sleep, the benefits of exercise, the benefits of going outside, etc. I helped plan out every class each week, while deciding if we needed to create new classes or change the ones that were already in place. I even helped come up with different equipment/rearrangements to help improve Northcrest.
Accomplishments
I created and led a Seated Tap Fitness Class. I was a dancer from the age of 2 to 18 and have rediscovered my passion for tap again. I asked the older adults if they would be interested in learning some tap steps, and a lot of them said they were interested as long as it was seated only. My supervisor sat and talked about it, and I found a way to do it, and she gave me the option to start the class. I did not hesitate and created it, and the class was a hit, and everyone enjoyed.
Learning experience
I learned how to be a vocal and visual leader.
What advice would you give?
Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. I had my heart set on getting my internship with a place for strength and conditioning, but I ended up doing my internship at an independent living community, and I found out that I really enjoy working with older adults. By not being afraid of trying something new, I found a passion that I thought I never had.
