Responsibilities

During my internship, I worked directly with children and families by building relationships, assessing their needs, and providing support through counseling, skill-building, and crisis intervention. I helped connect families to community resources, coordinated with other professionals, and participated in meetings and court-related processes. I also completed documentation and maintained confidentiality, adhering to agency and contract guidelines.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was building a good rapport with clients. Being able to build a trusting relationship where clients can come to you for concerns is huge and being able to build that with many different clients was a big accomplishment.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned is that everyday will be different. Even though I was doing similar things, a new problem could come up every day and you have to be able to roll with the punches. It can be frustrating when a day is planned out and then something gets cancelled or switched by clients but being able to work with clients through these sudden changes is important.

What advice would you give?

My advice would be to remember why you are going into this field. There will be hard days I have had a few but there will also be good moments that will remind you why you are in this line of work and you need to hold onto them. Also do not be afraid to explore other area or populations of people. This field is so large, and I went into this major thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but through experience, have found other areas that I enjoy working in.
