Riley Maher

Responsibilities

During my internship, I was given many opportunities working with Child Passenger Safety (CPS), and learning about injury prevention and many programs housed in A&O. I assisted with administrative duties like laminating and creating informational packets. I observed car seat appointments and even had the opportunity to become a CPS technician! I was able to coordinate a partnership between A&O and Des Moines Park and Rec to implement educational sessions during their summer camp! I was able to lead the healthy session which included educating about 100 children over the summer and providing giveaways for each child! I was also part of the Fire Safety house during Parks and Rec. As part of my internship I was able to aid in set up of our booth at the Governor's Traffic and Safety Bureau Conference and was able to attend the CPS conference in Arkansas. I participated in monthly department meetings and created strong relationships with all the ladies in the department!

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment was adding a Child Passenger Safety Technician certificate to my resume. This was also beneficial to the department as I was able to take appointments by myself at Blank!

Learning experience

I learned that communication is very important. There were many frustrations brought up during Parks and Rec and communication would have benefitted everyone. It is also important to develop relationships with your peers!

What advice would you give?

Ask questions! Asking questions shows you want to understand or are seeking clarification. It also shows you care about the outcome! And, always seize opportunities when they arise!
