Responsibilities

During my internship at Alpha Women’s Center in Ankeny, Iowa, I provided client care support by meeting with women to offer resources, guidance, and compassionate assistance. I also managed social media content and outreach, which increased community engagement and raised awareness of the center’s programs. In addition, I contributed to administrative projects, including document preparation, scheduling, and data organization, ensuring efficient daily operations. My role included coordinating volunteers by assigning tasks and assisting with event outreach and planning to promote services and strengthen community partnerships.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship at Alpha Women’s Center was building meaningful relationships with my coworkers and clients. Working closely with the team allowed me to grow professionally while fostering a supportive environment, and I found deep fulfillment through client care and personal interactions. Being able to walk alongside women in both difficult and joyful life moments was especially impactful, as it gave me the opportunity to provide encouragement, resources, and compassion when they needed it most.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned during my internship at Alpha Women's Center was how to navigate interactions with clients facing difficult circumstances, developing patience, empathy, and problem-solving skills to provide support in both challenging and meaningful moments. These experiences strengthened my ability to adapt to diverse situations and reinforced the importance of compassion and professionalism in client care.

What advice would you give?

One piece of advice I would give to future students in my major is to take time to honestly evaluate whether working closely with people, especially in difficult life situations, is something you feel prepared for and committed to. This field often requires patience, empathy, and resilience, as you will encounter clients and coworkers with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and challenges. It can be deeply rewarding to walk alongside others in both hard and hopeful moments, but it also demands emotional strength and a willingness to adapt. Understanding your own capacity for compassion and professional boundaries early on will help you thrive and find fulfillment in both academic and real-world experiences!
