College of Health and Human Sciences recognizes Fall 2024 Graduating Senior Awardees

University Marshal: Camryn Mosty

Camryn Mosty is graduating summa cum laude with a 4.0 grade point average, earning a Bachelor of Science in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design with an emphasis in Fashion Communications and a minor in Public Relations. Mosty has shown exceptional leadership and initiative, both in the classroom and through her involvement with the student-operated store, Innovate 1858. As the marketing director for Innovate 1858, she led a team of professionals in creating and executing strategic marketing initiatives. Additionally, she launched an online vintage clothing store, overseeing inventory, content creation, budgeting, and brand identity. Through her experiences, Mosty has fostered a culture of collaboration and excellence, positioning herself to make a meaningful impact in the fashion communications industry. After graduation, she will begin her career in Minneapolis.

College Marshal: Kiana Kaftousian

Kiana Kaftousian is graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health, a specialization in Pre-Health Professions, and a minor in Psychology. She has built extensive experience as an undergraduate research assistant in a cardiovascular lab, contributing to multiple projects and completing highly advanced tasks. Kaftousian has also been heavily engaged in the College of Health and Human Sciences, serving as President of Health and Human Sciences Student Council, President of the Physician Assistant Club, and as a student ambassador for the college. Outside of campus, she has worked as a patient care technician at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. She will continue working at a hospital until the spring, when she plans to apply to Physician Assistant graduate programs.

Dean’s Recognition Award: Hector De La Cruz

Hector De La Cruz is graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies. Throughout his time at Iowa State, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to both his studies and serving his community. He worked with an Iowa State Extension and Outreach program that supports Latinx youth and families in achieving their academic and career goals. De La Cruz also served as president of his fraternity, Sigma Lambda Beta, and later as president of the Multicultural Greek Council. His drive, compassion, and leadership will empower him to create positive change in his new role as a Habilitation and Behavioral Health Intervention Services Counselor at Stepping Stone Family Services in West Des Moines, Iowa. 

“Receiving this award is truly an honor not only to the work that I have done in my time as an undergraduate student, but also to the sacrifices my mother made, as well as others in my support system. It is an honor to be a Latino setting the standards higher for my community.”

Hector De La Cruz

Dean’s Recognition Award: Christabel Forney 

Christabel Forney is graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Culinary Food Science and minors in French and Beverage Management. An ambitious student, she has excelled in the classroom, taken travel courses in Paris, the Bahamas, and California, and competed in three product development competitions, with her team placing first in two competitions and second in another. Forney has gained industry experience through internships at Johnsonville and the Burke Corporation, and has worked for Iowa State University Dining and the Iowa State University Creamery. She has also served in leadership roles in the Food Science Club and in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Forney is set to make an impact, beginning her career as an Innovation and Design Technician at Buddy’s Kitchen in Minnesota. 

“I’m very honored to receive this award. It is a testimony to all the work, effort, and achievements that have gone into these past 4.5 years. I couldn’t be more grateful for the support of my family, professors, peers, and professionals in the food industry who have shaped my experience throughout my collegiate career.”

Christabel Forney

Dean’s Recognition Award: Ella Speich

Ella Speich is graduating summa cum laude with a 4.0 grade point average. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with endorsements in K-8 English and Language Arts, K-8 Reading, K-8 Mathematics, and 5-8 Algebra for High School Credit, along with a minor in Learning Technologies. A passionate advocate for children, Speich has worked as an undergraduate assistant at Iowa State’s Child Development Laboratory School and completed practicums at Monroe and Willowbrook elementary schools. She has also supported her fellow education students as peer mentor for a first-year learning community, Preparing Future Teachers, and as a student assistant in the Center for Technology in Learning and Teaching. Speich is currently a student teacher at Webster Elementary School in Urbandale, Iowa, and has a bright future ahead as an educator. 

“It is such an honor to have received a Dean’s Recognition Award. I would like to thank Iowa State University and the School of Education for providing me with countless opportunities to grow in leadership and as an educator. I am especially grateful for the incredible people I have met along the way—mentors, professors, and peers—who have inspired and supported me throughout this journey.”

Graduating Student of the Semester: Alyxandra Doughty 

Alyxandra Doughty is graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology of Science in Kinesiology and Health, a specialization in Pre-Health Professions, and a minor in Psychology. She has dedicated over two years to working in a research laboratory focused on improving the health of individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. Doughty has presented her research at Iowa State’s undergraduate research symposium and at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research. She is a member of the College of Health and Human Sciences Student Council and the Pre-Occupational Therapy Club, has volunteered for the Special Olympics, and has served as a mentor for young women through the YWCA. Doughty plans to attend Colorado State University, where she will further her education and earn a Doctorate of Occupational Therapy.

It motivates me to continue making a meaningful impact in the future, and continue learning, growing, and supporting others.”
