Overall Experience

My experience in Glasgow was one that I will never forget. I was able to immerse myself in the Scottish culture throughout my whole experience here. The University did a great job of helping us with this by having workshops and cultural nights throughout our first couple of weeks there. I was also able to immerse myself in other cultures because of the wide array of roommates I had from all over Europe. I met the best group of friends that I was able to travel to over 10 countries with, throughout my experience here. The university allowed me to learn more about the fashion industry and what it the business is like internationally. Overall, I had a lovely time, and it makes me want to return in the near future.

Learning experience

The most valuable learning experience I encountered was how schoolwork is majorly different from Iowa State. There are only one or two assignments throughout the whole semester, but they have a large impact on your grade. Because there are only two assignments, they are usually due towards the end of the semester. This was an eye-opener for me, and I needed to start my work earlier rather than later. The instructors do not send many reminders either, so I learned how to be responsible for my work. I also learned not to do things last minute because I wouldn't be able to complete my assignments with all my ability.

Memorable experience

The most memorable experience I have from this experience is seeing the Pope in Rome. My cousin from the States came to visit and we were walking back to our hostel when we came upon a crowd. We were unsure at first why they were gathered. We stood around for a little longer and suddenly, the Pope drives past in a little Fiat. It was a surreal experience.

What did you not expect?

Something I didn't expect coming into this experience was how hard it would be to adjust when you arrive back in the States. After such highs from traveling, it can be hard to go back to "normal life". I have started journaling to help with this and hopefully, I can use this method in my future as well.

What advice would you give?

Do it! I was hesitant at first, but I would do anything to experience it all over again. You learn so much about yourself and others, it is truly something that you cannot experience anywhere else.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience has impacted my personal goals by allowing me to go outside of my comfort zone. I have learned how to communicate with others from many different backgrounds. This experience has impacted my educational goals by allowing me to know more about international business and how it differs from the United States. Lastly, this experience has impacted my long-term career goals by learning about different cultures and how the workplace can be affected by so.

How did you learn about this experience?

I learned about this international opportunity by researching online through the Iowa State study abroad website. I knew studying abroad was an option, but I never saw it as an affordable option. Joining an exchange program allows you to study abroad and make it affordable. I learned this through setting up meetings with study abroad advisors and finding the best option for me personally.
