Learning experience
One of the most valuable learning experiences I encountered during my time in Jamaica was meeting and interacting with the students. Their dedication to education and the deep respect they showed toward their teachers and peers left a lasting impression on me. Despite facing challenges such as limited resources, they approached learning with enthusiasm, determination, and gratitude. What stood out most was their eagerness to participate in class, ask questions, and make the most of every lesson. Education was not something they took for granted—it was a privilege they embraced wholeheartedly. Their respect for teachers and visitors, shown through their attentiveness, politeness, and willingness to learn, demonstrated the strong values instilled in them by their schools and communities. From this experience, I learned the true value of education beyond just academics. I saw firsthand how a strong desire to learn, combined with perseverance and respect, can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. It reminded me never to take my own education for granted and inspired me to advocate for equitable learning opportunities for all students. This experience reinforced my belief that education is not just about acquiring knowledge—it is about empowerment, opportunity, and shaping a better future.
Memorable experience
One of the most memorable aspects of my time in Jamaica was exploring the country’s incredible landscapes and immersing myself in its rich culture, especially through visits to the Blue Mountains and Ocho Rios and experiencing the local cuisine. Hiking through the Blue Mountains was an unforgettable experience. The lush greenery, misty peaks, and breathtaking views made it feel like stepping into another world. As we climbed higher, we learned about the region’s famous Blue Mountain coffee, one of the best in the world, and even had the chance to taste its rich, smooth flavor. The serenity and beauty of the mountains showed me a different side of Jamaica—one of peacefulness and natural wonder. Ocho Rios was another highlight, with its blue waters and lively atmosphere. Visiting Ocho Rios also gave me insight into the warmth and energy of Jamaican life. Of course, no trip to Jamaica would be complete without indulging in the local food. From flavorful jerk chicken cooked over pimento wood to hearty ackee and saltfish, every dish was a celebration of bold spices and fresh ingredients. And nothing was more refreshing than cold coconut water straight from the shell after a long day of exploring. Experiencing Jamaica through its landscapes, people, and food made my trip truly unforgettable. It deepened my appreciation for the country’s beauty and culture, and I left with not only incredible memories but also a newfound respect for the island’s rich traditions and way of life.
What did you not expect?
One of the most surprising and eye-opening aspects of my time in Jamaica was witnessing how deeply valued education is by students. Unlike in the United States, where school can sometimes be seen as an obligation rather than a privilege, Jamaican students approached their education with an inspiring level of dedication, gratitude, and respect. What struck me most was their eagerness to learn despite facing challenges such as limited resources and overcrowded classrooms. Many students saw education as their key to a better future and embraced it with determination. They listened intently, participated enthusiastically, and showed immense respect for their teachers—something that stood in contrast to the more casual attitude toward schooling that I’ve often seen in the U.S. This experience shifted my perspective on education and how I approach both my professional and personal life. It made me realize how important it is to foster a culture of appreciation for learning, not just as a requirement but as an opportunity for growth and empowerment. Whether in my future career or in everyday interactions, I want to encourage a mindset that values education as much as I saw in Jamaica. Moving forward, I will be more intentional about promoting a love for learning, emphasizing its impact beyond just grades or degrees. I also want to find ways to support students who may not recognize the value of their education, helping them see that knowledge is not just something to acquire—it’s something that can truly change their lives.

For any student considering studying abroad or having a similar experience, my biggest advice is: do it! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will change the way you see the world, education, and even yourself. One of the most amazing aspects of studying abroad in Jamaica was seeing the school system firsthand. It was eye-opening to witness how dedicated students were to their education, how much respect they had for their teachers, and how they valued learning as a pathway to success. Experiencing a different approach to education gave me a deeper appreciation for learning and made me reflect on how we sometimes take school for granted. Beyond the classroom, Jamaican culture was equally inspiring. From the warmth of the people to the rhythm of the music, the incredible food, and the stunning natural beauty, every moment was filled with something new to learn and appreciate. Stepping outside of my comfort zone allowed me to embrace different traditions and see the world from a fresh perspective. If you have the chance to study abroad, go with an open mind and be ready to immerse yourself fully. Engage with the local community, ask questions, try new foods, and embrace every challenge. These experiences will not only give you unforgettable memories but will also shape your worldview, making you more adaptable, understanding, and appreciative of different cultures. Studying abroad in Jamaica was a transformative experience that deeply impacted my personal growth, educational aspirations, and long-term career goals. Working in classrooms alongside Jamaican students and teachers exposed me to different educational approaches and the unique challenges faced by under-resourced schools. This hands-on experience strengthened my commitment to education and inspired me to explore ways to make learning more accessible and engaging for all students, regardless of their background. Additionally, collaborating with peers to paint a mural allowed me to witness the power of art in fostering community spirit and storytelling, further igniting my interest in creative and impactful teaching methods. On a personal level, this experience enhanced my adaptability, communication skills, and cultural awareness. Engaging with students and teachers in a different country pushed me out of my comfort zone, teaching me the value of patience, empathy, and resilience.
