Overall Experience
Studying abroad in Florence, Italy, was an unforgettable and transformative experience. Moving to a completely new city, especially one in Europe, came with its challenges, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding times. From walking past historic landmarks on my way to class to exploring different countries on the weekends, every moment was exciting and new. Immersing myself in Florence's history and culture opened my eyes to how much more there is to this world. I learned to step out of my comfort zone, built new relationships, and learned to balance academics. It is hard to put into words how impactful this experience was, but it has helped shape my perspective and broaden my view of the world.
Learning experience
One of the most valuable learning experiences I had while studying abroad was learning how to navigate life in an unfamiliar environment. When I got to Florence, I already had challenges that pushed me out of my comfort zone. One of the biggest was living with random roommates I had never met before. Learning personalities, routines, and expectations was difficult, especially learning a new country and being away from home. On top of that, I had to learn how to manage things like transportation, grocery shopping, and communication. Through these experiences, I became more self-reliant, adaptable, and confident in my abilities to be kind and problem-solve.
Memorable experience
As cliche as this may sound, my most memorable experience was one when traveling. As a kid, I grew up loving and admiring the Tinkerbell movies. Both on worksheets and other activities, my dream place to go to when telling people was to see the Big Ben. During this time abroad, I was able to travel to London, and truly, it felt like an out-of-body experience. I got to see with my own eyes what I had always grown up dreaming about, and I was with friends around me who understood the importance. I was able to check something off my life bucket list while immersed in their culture as well.
What did you not expect?
One of the things that surprised me during my study abroad experience was the slower, more intentional pace of life in Italy. Before living in Florence, I had visited Europe before and got to experience some of this, but while spending 4 months there, it was different. Coming from the US, where it is normal to be in a fast-paced environment while multitasking and constantly productive, I didn't expect there to be so much prioritization of taking time. Enjoying a long meal at dinner without having the waiter asking you if you're done, closing shops midday, and slow walking were the main things I noticed. At first, it was definitely difficult to manage, especially the slow walking coming from someone who walks with intent, but over time, I shifted my mindset, and now, after being back, it has made me appreciate the slowness and enjoyment of life. It made me realize burnout is real and that here in the States, we are rushing through life and just going through the motions. In both my person and professional career, I hope to use this knowledge to be more intentional and focus on quality over quantity.
What advice would you give?
Just do it!!! I know it might be out of your comfort zone, but by the end of it, you will be sad to leave and look back knowing those 4 months have been the best time of your life. I would also advise exploring your home city!!! This is a big one, looking back, and I know others can attest, I wish I had spent more time in Florence and taken it all in. I am so grateful for this experience, and I wish every day I could go back and visit again. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and if you are scared, reach out to someone who has been through it! Yes, there are ups and downs, but everyone I know who didn't study abroad has always regretted not doing it. But, I will say know your personality. If you are completely not comfortable living in a new country for 4 months, take time to think and once again ask questions!
How has this experience impacted your life?
Studying abroad in Florence has impacted my life on many levels. It has shaped me personally, academically, and professionally. One of the most valuable parts of the experience was meeting a professional mentor who offered insight into job searching and my future career path. Academically, my classes pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to grow. I developed communication and collaboration skills, as well as gained real-world experience in how businesses operate from a global perspective. Being in a different culture opened my eyes to new ways of living and exposed me to experiences I never imagined being a part of. Personally, I grew a lot more than expected. From learning how to budget, plan, and adapt, to navigating unfamiliar places and managing challenges on my own. I had the chance to meet new people, visit historic landmarks, and truly see the world from a new lens. This experience taught me resilience, independence, and how to embrace change. It is something I will never forget, and I can say it was the most rewarding, incredible experience of my life.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first learned about this international opportunity through a few girls in my sorority who had previously participated in the same program. I wanted to learn more, so I asked questions and visited the study abroad center.
