Overall Experience

My study abroad experience in Florence, Italy, during the summer was both academically enriching and personally rewarding. The courses I took, pairing wine and food, provided new perspectives and allowed me to engage with the material in a more global context. Studying in a city known for its art, architecture, and history greatly enhanced my learning experience. Outside of the classroom, I had the opportunity to explore Italian culture firsthand. I visited museums, historic landmarks, and nearby cities such as Rome, Venice, Naples, Cinque Terre, and other countries such as Croatia, Barcelona, and Greece. These experiences deepened my appreciation for Italy’s cultural heritage and helped me better understand its influence on the modern world. Living and studying in Florence also helped me grow personally. I became more independent, adaptable, and confident in navigating new environments. Overall, this experience expanded my worldview and strengthened both my academic and life skills.

Learning experience

The most valuable learning experience I had while studying abroad in Florence was stepping outside the classroom and engaging directly with the local culture. One moment that stood out was navigating daily life in a city where I didn’t speak the language fluently. Whether ordering food, asking for directions, or shopping at local markets, I had to learn how to communicate across language barriers and adapt quickly. From this, I learned the importance of patience, open-mindedness, and non-verbal communication. It also taught me how to be more confident in unfamiliar situations and to view challenges as opportunities to grow. This experience helped me develop stronger problem-solving skills and a greater appreciation for different cultures and ways of life.

Memorable experience

My most memorable experiences from this experience was honestly the people that surrounded me and the different weekend trips we took. Coming into this, I only knew my roommate. It was rewarding having the best roommates and having the opportunity to explore the country as a whole. I am so thankful to have this opportunity.

What did you not expect?

One thing that surprised me during my time in Florence was how different daily life felt compared to what I was used to. The slower pace, emphasis on community, and value placed on enjoying the moment were very different from the fast-paced lifestyle I was familiar with. I didn’t expect to appreciate this shift so much, but it made a lasting impression on me. This experience changed how I view both my personal and professional life. It taught me the importance of balance, being present, and building strong relationships values I now want to carry into my future career.

What advice would you give?

My biggest piece of advice to other students who want to study abroad is to do it. Say yes to everything. The money will come back. The memories I made during this experience and the people I meet is something I will cherish forever. You will miss home sometimes, but live in the moment. Studying abroad is a privilege and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

How has this experience impacted your life?

Studying abroad in Florence has had a lasting impact on my life. This experience is truly a summer I will remember forever. Personally, it helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident in unfamiliar situations. Living in another country and navigating a different culture pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. Educationally, the experience deepened my interest in wine and food pairing and taught me edict and other techniques when it come to wine. In terms of my long-term career goals, this experience inspired me to pursue opportunities that involve international collaboration and cross-cultural communication. It confirmed my interest in working in a global setting and strengthened my commitment to developing skills that will help me succeed in an increasingly connected world. In the future I want to work with event management worldwide and be able to travel the world.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first learned about this international opportunity through Iowa State's study abroad office. They offered information sessions and advising about various programs, and Florence stood out to me because of its beautiful city and being easily walkable. I also had friends study abroad.
