Overall Experience
Studying abroad in Korea and Vietnam was a life-changing and eye-opening experience for which I’m incredibly grateful. Throughout the trip, I connected with so many new people, including locals and fellow Iowa State students I had never met or hadn’t had the chance to get to know before. I learned so much from this experience, not only about different cultures and customs, but also about the global fashion industry. One of the most impactful moments was getting to see how some fashion companies manufacture their garments from start to finish.
Learning experience
This trip really pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect. Before departing, we had many conversations about how different Asian cultures are compared to those in the U.S., but experiencing those differences firsthand was transformative. It was my first time leaving the country and navigating airports and public transportation on my own. I had to quickly adjust to new environments, learn how to communicate across language barriers, and embrace moments of discomfort. Through it all, I became more self-reliant, resilient, and open-minded. In addition to the cultural experiences, I also gained valuable insight into the fashion industry in Asia. We had the opportunity to visit local shops, manufacturers, and even a factory in Vietnam, where I saw the garment production process from start to finish. Witnessing the scale and precision of these operations gave me a deeper appreciation for global production practices and the people behind them. This experience has not only shaped my personal growth but also influenced the way I think about fashion and my future career in the industry.
Memorable experience
One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea. Our group had the opportunity to wear Hanbok, traditional Korean dress, while exploring the palace grounds. It was such an immersive and special experience—walking through historic courtyards and ornate architecture while dressed in clothing that holds deep cultural significance. Many local visitors smiled at us or took photos, which made me feel welcomed and connected to the culture in a way I hadn’t expected. It was a surreal moment that brought history to life and reminded me how fashion can be both a personal expression and a powerful link to heritage and tradition.
What did you not expect?
Something I didn’t expect was how quickly I was able to bond with people I had barely known before the trip. Even though we were all fashion students, many of us hadn’t really connected prior to traveling. But being in a new environment together—navigating unfamiliar cities, trying new foods, and learning side by side—brought us closer in a matter of days. I also didn’t expect how much I would enjoy stepping into the unknown. While I was initially nervous about the language barrier and being so far from home, I found that the challenges became some of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
What advice would you give?
If you’re studying abroad in Korea and Vietnam, make sure you do all that you can to fully embrace the experience. Say yes to new foods, explore beyond the itinerary, talk to locals, and connect with your classmates—even the ones you don’t know well. Some of the most meaningful moments happen when you step outside your comfort zone. The trip goes by quickly, so soak it all in and don’t hold back—you’ll leave with unforgettable memories, personal growth, and a new perspective on the world.
How has this experience impacted your life?
This experience had a profound impact on my life, both personally and professionally. Living and learning in Korea and Vietnam helped me develop a stronger sense of independence, confidence, and adaptability. I learned how to navigate unfamiliar situations, communicate across language barriers, and embrace new perspectives. It also deepened my understanding of the global fashion industry and gave me a greater appreciation for the cultural context behind design and production. Most importantly, it showed me how much growth can happen when you step outside your comfort zone. I came home with a broader worldview, meaningful connections, and a clearer sense of who I am and where I want to go.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first heard about Iowa State’s study abroad opportunities during my initial college visit. Later on, I learned more about the Fashion Across Borders program through my professor, Yvonne Lee, who was the faculty member leading the trip. She also had posters displayed around Mackay, which helped spark my interest even further.
