Fran Cummings has always been passionate about working with people and making others happy. It was this passion that led her to major in Hospitality Management with a minor in Event Management.

Originally from Morris, Illinois, Cummings chose Iowa State for its close-knit community, the beauty of its campus, and its many hands-on opportunities. She spent her first two years at Iowa State building connections and friendships within her sorority and the broader campus community. Her favorite memories are the times spent with friends, sharing stories and laughter.

“I’ve met so many people from different backgrounds at Iowa State,” she said. “The amazing friendships and memories I’ve made here will last a lifetime.”

Cummings values her time working in the Joan Bice Underwood Tearoom, a restaurant and classroom within Iowa State’s hospitality management program. As part of the Food Production and Service Management Experience course, students help operate the Tearoom, gaining firsthand experience in food service and restaurant operations.

“It’s hard work, but it’s also rewarding, and I bonded with friends in my major through it,” she said.

She has made the most of global opportunities as well, studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, and preparing for a semester in Athens, Greece. These experiences have broadened her worldview and prepared her for the global hospitality industry.

After graduation, Cummings dreams of founding her own chain of hotels, combining hospitality and event management to create joyful, meaningful guest experiences.

“For me, success means doing something that makes me happy, positively impacts others, and gives me the ability to travel,” she said.

Her advice for fellow students is simple: “Try everything at least once! You will not regret it.”
