Education Visit Day – October 7

We’re hosting a special visit day for high-school and transfers students who are interested in becoming a teacher. You’ll engage in workshops, meet your professors, hear from current students and tour our facilities.

Registration Information

  1. Visit this Admissions page
  2. Click on Mon., “10/07/2024”
  3. If you have not visited campus before, click “Create Account.” If you have visited campus or started an application for admission, click “Log In.”
  4. Complete the registration fields.
  5. When you get to “intended major,” choose an option listed as “Education: Major Name” – this will put you in the education visit day

7:45 to 8:50 a.m. – Programs and Services Fair, Great Hall, Memorial Union

11 to 11:50 a.m. – Session Block #1

  • FCEDS: Mastering the Art of Teaching FCS: A Journey Through the Innovations Center Labs (Student Innovation Center) – Iowa State University’s Family & Consumer Sciences Education program, enhanced by the Student Innovation Center, offers a unique, forward-thinking approach to preparing the next generation of FCS educators.
  • Secondary Education at Iowa State (Campanile Room, Memorial Union) – Exploring the different options for students who want to teach middle school or high school.
  • Teaching Agricultural Science (225 Curtiss Hall) – Do you have a passion for agriculture? Would you like to share that with others? Every day in the life of an agriculture teacher is different and exciting. Come experience what it’s like to be an agriculture teacher!
  • Music Education at Iowa State (125 Simon Estes Music Hall) – Overview of opportunities for music education students at ISU

12:05 to 12:55 p.m. – Enjoy lunch with representatives from ISU’s education programs!

1:10 to 2 p.m. – Session Block #2

  • Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education and Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies Student Discussion Panel (2622 Lagomarcino Hall) – Current students answer questions about the ECE, Elementary, Secondary education programs and life at Iowa State.
  • Game On! Creative Activity Design for Future PE Teachers! (202 W Forker) – Get ready to think like a PE teacher! This session invites future educators to engage in a dynamic activity design challenge. Teams will brainstorm and create games that promote physical activity for different age levels, then present and playtest their ideas with their peers. It’s a perfect opportunity to discover the fun of teaching PE!
  • Early Childhood Education and Family and Consumer Sciences Education and Studies Popcorn With Professors! (Palmer Building Atrium) – Connect with faculty to ask questions and learn about our Early Childhood Education major!

Teaching Paths at Iowa State

Iowa State offers a variety of paths to become a licensed teacher that lead to many different types of careers. Your education will include hands-on experience in real classrooms throughout your Iowa State journey so you graduate prepared to lead a classroom of your own.

Early Childhood Education (preschool through third grade)

You will graduate with the credentials needed to become licensed to teach preschool through third grade in general and special education. Students go on to careers as teachers in classrooms, in special education, head start and as instructional strategists.

Elementary Education (kindergarten through sixth, kindergarten through eighth)

You will graduate with the credentials needed to become licensed to teach kindergarten through sixth grade in a general education setting. Additional endorsements can qualify you to teach kindergarten through eighth grade in your chosen content area.

Secondary Education (fifth through twelfth grade)

With a path in secondary education, you become an expert in your chosen subject matter by learning from professors in your specialization area. You’re also part of the School of Education’s robust program that prepares you to effectively teach content to your students. You’ll graduate with the credentials needed to become a licensed teacher in fifth through 12th grade classrooms. You can become a teacher in the following areas with a secondary education path:
