How to Prepare for Career Fairs

We’re here to help you prepare for a successful career fair experience! Schedule an appointment with our office for additional assistance with preparing for career fairs.

Tips for Career Fair Success

Research Participating Organizations

  • Log into your CyHire account using your ISU NetID (SSO).
  • Click on ‘Events’ on the left, then click “Advanced Search” to view upcoming events.
  • Search by employer, event name, or keyword if you are searching for specific events; click on the name of the fair(s) of interest to you.
  • Click on the ‘Employers’ tab within the fair to see an alphabetical list of participants; use the search bar or filters to find organizations based on your interests.
  • Click on the organization name to see an overview, CyHire postings, and information from the organization’s registration including job functions and anticipated openings. Please note that not all registrants provide this information.
  • Make notes about the organization, including where they are located, what they do, and why you are interested, and bring them with you to review prior to talking with the organization at the fair.
  • Be open minded! Consider speaking with organizations you may be less familiar with.

Prepare Your Resume

  • Visit the resume sample resource section of our website to review various resume samples.
  • Attend a prep event on creating an effective resume.
  • Make an appointment in CyHire to have your resume reviewed by the staff in Health and Human Sciences Career Services.
  • Bring at least 10-15 printed copies of your resume to the career fair.
  • Use a professional folder or padfolio to carry your resumes and notes. You may be able to obtain one from Health and Human Sciences Career Services during an appointment.

Choose Your Attire

  • First impressions are important – plan your attire ahead of time.
  • Participating organizations may expect that you are dressed more professionally for a career fair. Examples of attire may include business suits, slacks, dress shirts, ties, blouses, polos, khakis, and knee length or longer skirts and dresses.
  • Do not let concerns with attire prevent you from attending. Many resources are available including used professional clothing options through local stores and the ISU Pop-Up Shop. Our staff is happy to speak with you about any questions you have regarding attire.

Introduce Yourself

Engaging effectively with organizations at the career fair makes a positive impression. Practice how you introduce yourself with a firm handshake.

Example: “Hello, my name is ___________ and I will be graduating from ISU in ___year ___with a degree in __________.” (Smile, shake hands, pause) “I am looking for a position in the area of ____________.” OR “ I want to talk with you because…”

Prepare Questions to Ask

Examples may include:

  • “What skills does your company value the most?”
  • “What experiences would help me stand out as a future applicant?”
  • “Which areas have current (or future) openings?” (If not listed in CyHire)
  • “What happens to my resume after I submit it?”
  • “Is there any way I can stand out in your online system?”
  • “How can I stay in communication with you?”

Follow Up After the Fair

  • Ask for the recruiter’s business card and inquire as to how you should best follow up.
  • Send a thank you email within 48 hours following the career fair and take any steps recommended by the recruiter.
  • Express gratitude and remind them of your interest.
