The ISU 4U Promise program began in 2013 as a result of a conversation between former Dr. Steven Leath, president of Iowa State University, and Ako Abdul-Samad, state representative and community leader. Iowa State University partnered with Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) to create a new pathway to college for students at King and Moulton elementary schools. The pathway allows students from the two schools to earn tuition awards to attend Iowa State.

Today, the ISU 4U Promise is a partnership among the Iowa State College of Health and Human Sciences, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Iowa State University Financial Aid, Des Moines Public Schools, and many of the community organizations that serve the youth and families of King and Moulton elementary schools. Together these various stakeholders aim to make college a reality for the students of King and Moulton elementary schools.
